My parents told me ....

When they were at school, there was almost no violence.

Only in the mornings, after 8 o'clock, the ones who were late were running in the classrooms, pushing each other, falling and hurting themselves.

This was the only thing that was violent those days.

My parents told me...

When my parents were my age, the rate of bullying was low compared to nowadays. Why? The communist regime was very severe and there were not so many influences (like media, films). The school regulations were so strict that no student or teacher dared to break them.

Word of the week: stereotyping

Stereotyping - including all the persons in a single group without knowing everyone

"stereotyping". Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary. 3rd edition. 2008.

My parents told me:

On the parents time, violence in schools was not so popular because of reduced causes of information and communist regime which didn't allow this thing.
You are not allowed to make public various cases and situations so as not to encourage the use of violence.

My parents told me...

When my  parents were in school, there were very isolated cases of violence, and no one could know about them. The violence didn't exist, because of the communist regime, which didn't allow freedom. After the fall of the regime, all took freedom for as a shield for doing and saying whatever they wanted; adding to this was the growing exposure to sensational news, or movies, without any strict regulations regarding audiences. All those have lead to increased violence.

My parents told me...

Thirty years ago, when my parents were at school violence was seen quite different . Children only used violence when desperately needed, most of the cases in self-defence against a theft. In the communist time children resolved disputes and squabbles with the help of wise words and easy to understand explanations. My father once told me that violence in schools didn't actually exist because children that time were too busy having fun and learning. Kids nowadays are very different from the ones who lived thirty years ago, as they try to become adults too soon, and unfortunately that with the help of violence.

My parents told me...

In the old times the violence was almost inexistent because of the communist regime. The difference between then and nowis that in the old times no one was that informed like nowadays because mass-media was restricted and there wasn't internet.

People against violence: Jesus

Violence can be redefined as some pain or trouble you cause to another person. Jesus was the first person who died trying to implement the idea that violence, pain and trouble only weaken us, either it is mentally or physical.
Through his wise preaches he spread some essential rules on which we still rely. These rules are the basis of our Civil Code, or the Human Rights. We can still remember some famous quotes from the bible: “Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.”, "Jesus said...all who live by the sword will die by the sword.” and of course “Do not repay evil with evil.”
Through His wise words, Jesus spread love and tightness between people and helped them reduce violence and sufferings.
In my opinion Jesus was the first man against violence who spent His life trying to make ours easier.

Interview with an expert

Interview with Mistress Luana Ionita (Schools No.1’s adjunct principal)
Olteanu Adrian: “Good day Mrs. Luana, me and some students are making a project
about violence in schools. And since you understand a child’s behavior better
than everyone else I got a few questions regarding this topic”.
Mrs. Luana: "Hello, nice to hear that..."
Olteanu Adrian: "Why are kids violent?"
Mrs. Luana: "There are some causes why kids are violent: they were victims
of violence in the past and they want to mentally rebalance. They have in their
family an adult model who is violent and dominates and imposes with this thing.
They have a group of friends or they want to imitate others who are acting like
that. They grew up in a place were the education is based on violence
Olteanu Adrian: "How can we control our anger?"
Mrs. Luana: "By developing self-control. By therapy if the anger can not be
handled. By learning alternative behaviors, on which you can rely when the
anger occurs.
Olteanu Adrian: "Do you think violence is a good thing?"
Mrs Luana: "Mainly, violence is not good, as violence born violence.
Violence is not justified, nor forgiven as long as it causes physical pain and
mental sufferings, injuries or someone's death. There are situations where
violence is justified, especially in theft or threatening cases.
Olteanu Adrian: "Thank you, Mrs. Luana, you have been very helpful"

Consequences of violence on children

A lot of children are affected by the events happened in the school. For example, they are scared by everyone, beeing hard for them to make new friends, after they were injured physical or mental by a bully. Or they've grew in a place where the violence was a way to survive and they learned that to be violent is normal.
